Settlement archaeology is the study of the selection criteria and implantation of settlements in the landscape, interrelationships between cities and their rural surroundings, the impact of human occupation on the natural environment and vice versa under past conditions.

The goal of settlement archaeology is to rebuild the cultures of historic cities, towns, and their surrounding areas holistically. By definition, settlement archaeological research is a multidisciplinary endeavour that calls for knowledge in the fields of the natural and social sciences, architecture, and city planning, as well as specialised methods for retrieving, recording, analysing, and managing data banks of archaeological data (GIS), conserving sites, and managing cultural resources. Geology, environmental geomorphology, archaeozoology, palaeontology, paleobotany, archaeometry, ancient history, anthropology, sociology, urban geography, classical architecture, and city planning are disciplines and interdisciplinary sub-disciplines that are furthermore necessary to archaeology.
